Walking Techniques
Walking Technique
You've been doing it since you were about 1 year old, but if you want to get fit and decrease the risk of getting injured, try these techniques:
1. Think tall and walk with good posture
- Keep a neutral spine with your head stacked over your shoulders and your hips over your knees and feet.
- With each step, your heel touches the ground first then roll over the ball of your foot onto your toes. Push off with your toes.
- Have your knee, heel and toes pointed forward in the direction of travel
- One foot bears all your weight until your other heel strikes the ground
- Swing arms naturally at your sides in opposition to your legs.
- For more intensity and speed, bend your elbow to 90 degrees
- Keep elbows close to your body and swing your hands to chest level
- You should be able to carry out a normal conversation while walking.
- Any time you feel out of breath or have any pain, slow down or take a break.
